OTTAWA - Pierre Lemieux, Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, has made some memorable speeches this session of Parliament. Being the first MP to officially speak in the House for the 39 th Parliament, Mr. Lemieux delivered the Address in Reply to the Speech from the Throne on April 3 rd, 2006. It should be noted that, as this session draws closer to the summer recess, Mr. Lemieux will in fact be one of the last parliamentarians to speak in the house. On June 23, Mr. Lemieux will speak briefly about L’echo d’un people and the Glengarry Highland Games; two extraordinary events taking place in GPR this summer. He concluded that, “The riding has been extremely well represented from the beginning of the session, right through to the end. I am always voicing the issues and concerns of my constituents and highlighting the strengths of our riding in the House and to my colleagues.” As a result of his inaugural speech, Mr. Lemieux visited the Governor General, Michaëlle Jean, at Rideau Hall. The Governor General was graciously responded to Mr. Lemieux’s speech. When asked to comment, he explained, “I have met the Governor General several times and it is always an honour to represent the constituents at Rideau Hall.” L’echo d’un people is a grand spectacle which is taking place in the riding from July 6 th to August 19 th. It celebrates Franco Ontarian culture with three performances a week, showcasing the talents of more than 200 to 300 actors, dancers, and jugglers. The Glengarry Highland Games are estimated to be one of the largest highland games in the world and have attracted over 1 million visitors since its first competition in 1948. In addition to fierce competition, this event showcases music, dance, pageantry, and tradition. Mr. Lemieux added, “Both of these events are superb examples of the talented, hard-working citizens of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. It is my honour to rise in the House to speak on their behalf and let Canadians know of the wonderful events in our riding.”
