OTTAWA — Pierre Lemieux, MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, congratulates the organizations in the riding who successfully applied to the “Celebrate Canada!” program and have received funding to organize activities to celebrate St. Jean Baptiste Day and Canada Day. “Communities across GPR are able to coordinate events in order to celebrate Canada, its history, and our wonderfully unique local heritage, thanks to an investment from our government,” said Mr. Lemieux.

Over $35,000 is being committed to help local communities promote, encourage, and coordinate the organization of Canada Day events. Thanks to this support, GPR residents will be able to take part in activities marking Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, and Canada Day on July 1. Recipients include the municipalities of North Glengarry, Champlain, Casselman, Hawkesbury, Rockland, La Nation, as well as the Lions Club of Russell and the Firemans Association of L’Orignal.

“St. Jean Baptiste and Canada Day present the perfect opportunities to discover and celebrate our communities and recognize their important contribution to Canada,” stated Mr. Lemieux. “Our government is proud to support activities that celebrate our culture, our country, and our history.”

The federal government has provided this financial support under the Celebrate Canada! program, which aims to enhance pride in Canada by encouraging the participation of its citizens in Celebrate Canada! activities being held from June 21 to July 1.

“Canada’s categorical success at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics this year provides an even greater cause to celebrate our great country,” said Mr. Lemieux. He continued, “The Games unified Canadians across the country in support of our athletes, and the patriotic energy generated by the Games is bound to carry over into the St. Jean Baptiste and Canada Day festivities. Let’s celebrate our great country!”
