Lemieux Fights for Families
Conservatives Offer Families a Change for the Better

Embrun (Dec 18, 2005) – As the federal election campaign enters its fourth week, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Conservative candidate Pierre Lemieux and the Conservative Party are emerging as the team that will fight for families.

“Hard-working families who play by the rules deserve a break after 12 years of Liberal neglect and indifference,” said Lemieux. “Voters will have to consider in this election the differences between the Liberals and the Conservatives over who will stand up for families. Liberals have been rewarding their friends and cronies with sponsorship money and advertising contracts. Conservatives – like me and Stephen Harper – will stand up for families.”

Here are some of the family-friendly initiatives Conservatives have announced in the election so far:

  • A GST Tax Cut for All Canadians: Pierre Lemieux and Stephen Harper will cut the GST to five percent;
  • A New Choice in Childcare Allowance: Conservatives will offer up to $1200 per year per child under six years of age for parents to spend on child care as they see fit as well as $250-million in capital to create 125,000 new childcare spaces;
  • A Text Book Tax Credit for Students: A new tax credit that allows students to claim up to $500 for text books;
  • A Tax Credit for Sports and other Fitness Activities: Families with children under 16 will get a new credit to help lower the cost of sports, swimming, dance, and other fitness activities like karate;
  • Cut Waiting Times: Like many, I am a husband, father and son and I want to make sure health care is there when we need it for my kids, my spouse and my parents – and yours;
  • Fight to Make our Streets and Communities Safer: It is time to reform sentencing, lock up criminals, give police the tools they need and fight drug abuse among youth.

“The Liberals patronize and mock families and talk about parents using child care money for beer and popcorn,” said Lemieux. “That’s wrong and Stephen Harper and I are the only ones who will fight for families.”
