Conservatives will cut GST to Five Percent

‘This is a Tax Cut for Everyone’: Lemieux

Rockland, ON (December 1, 2005) – Conservative candidate Pierre Lemieux (Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, ON) welcomed the announcement by Conservative Leader Stephen Harper today that a new Conservative government will cut the GST to five per cent.

“Cutting the GST to five per cent will help every Canadian,” said Lemieux. “This cut to the GST will leave hard-working families with more of their own money to spend, save or invest as they see fit.”

The Conservatives under Stephen Harper will immediately cut the GST to six per cent. The tax will be reduced further to five per cent within five years. (In New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia, the HST reduction will be the same: one per cent right away, and a further one per cent over five years.)

While in power, the Liberals have doubled the amount of GST taken from Canadians; increasing it from $15.9 billion to $31.8 billion. The increase exceeded inflation and outstripped growth in people’s earnings. Were the old Manufacturers’ Sales Tax in place, it would only generate $24 billion, far less than the Liberals are taking from Canadians with the GST.

Meanwhile, the Liberals have spent money on themselves and their friends, and wasted billions of taxpayers’ dollars. The total federal surplus was $63 billion during the last eight years and is projected to total $55 billion over the next six.

“ The Conservative GST cut is tax relief that will benefit EVERY Canadian, EVERY time they go to the store,” said Lemieux. “We are working for Canadians.”
